Home / The Edit Lighting Solutions Play With… Sticks Sticks is a toolkit for lighting architectural spaces created by Arik Levy in collaboration with Vibia. A system that brings out the lighting designer in all of us, even though there are pre-configured options to choose from as well. Never has there been a more playful yet effective way of complimenting the unique character of the spaces that accommodate our lives.Whether it be commercial, retail or residential Sticks can bring out something unexpected, facilitating a different reading of space. Using just three modular lighting rods, we invite you to have fun with Sticks. © Reinhart Julian The secret to Sticks’ versatility is its ingenious rod connectors. A kit of parts that provides numerous possibilities of connecting wall and ceiling planes within the space it illuminates. Here angled Sticks in paired rods create a loosely-configured chandelier within an octagonal plan lobby. Sticks can highlight the qualities of the architectural structure in surprising ways. Here the linearity of the system contrasts with the repetitive structural arches. Diagonal lines of light move through this space of congregation, contrasting with its more sensuous curves. The same space can be read in an entirely different way with a sconce treatment of Sticks. The paired rods are supported on the walls that define the bays with the upper rod angled upwards towards the ceiling. The clean aluminium profile detail housing the LED source is chameleon like, fitting in with any setting. Sticks projects light where it is required as well as providing an ambient illumination to soften the space. This example illustrates a reception desk occupying a corner nook that features a floor mounted pair of Sticks which not only add character but functionality. The minimalism of the layout is made more friendly and welcoming. Individual rods can be connected in a linear arrangement or simply configured along the same line in space. Here three rods touch the envelope of a bay window alcove with a dining table to further define a separate zone that is nevertheless connected to its enclosure. The simple logic of placing office furniture in the optimum layout is converted into something entirely different with Sticks. A vertical and horizontal rod, together create a portal configuration over each workstation. The space is thus calibrated by the light, creating a sense of belonging, and a more human scale.
