Vibia Designers Shed Light On The Design Process

This year at the biennial event, Light + Building, in Frankfurt, Germany, we were graciously visited by famous product designers, Arik Levy, Stefan Diez and Antoni Arola, to explain the inspiration behind their new lighting design concepts for Vibia. Many notable magazines in the industry came by to listen including Archiproducts, Azure, Lightecture and Architectural Lighting, just to name a few.

 

 

Stefan Diez was the first to speak as he explained his inspiration for his first collection for Vibia, GUISE. 

 

 

Diez expressed his perseverance through experimentation in the GUISE collection as he endeavored to create a pedant that would create a focused yet ambient lighting effect. Not undiscouraged from previous failed attempts, he continued to experiment until finding that by scratching the surface of the glass, he can create additional edges from which the light could be projected. 

 

 

Later on, we caught up with product designer, sculptor and lighting designer, Arik Levy, who explained his thinking behind his new concepts, STICKS and STRUCTURAL.

 

 

As always, Levy dazzled the press with his rhythmical and intricate view of his design process. He demonstrated the connection and versatility of light through his new design. Levy stated, “Light is not a fixed structure, but a way to connect walls to space. It is the illusion between architecture and light.” He was devoted to discovering a way to connect space and architecture.

 

 

Spanish designer, Antoni Arola, is known to lead by passion in his product design as well as in his career. Besides designing several products for Vibia, he is a fulltime professor at a Barcelona design university.

 

 

In addition to teaching, two of his lifelong passions have been lighting and plants. He imagines the idea of ivy creeping up a building façade as the ultimate expression of nature integrating itself into architecture. This inspiration led to the design concept for PALMA. 

 

 

The ultimate goal was to integrate plant life with lighting as it compliments the fixture and daylight as well as to help the plants grow.
