Stories Behind: Nexum

Nexum expresses light as structure, reinterpreting the chandelier as a continuous language that expands and evolves through space. Designed by Arik Levy, its modular geometry responds intuitively to the surrounding architecture, defining spaces with a coherent logic without adding visual weight. Shifting light to the upper plane, it shapes precise atmospheres with balanced, glare-free illumination.

“I wanted to create a future classic. I wanted to get away from the romanticism of the chandelier and create something more structured… to have the system follow the space and not just create a focal point.”

Nexum was conceived as a way to connect different areas within our living environment. Levy redefines the concept of the chandelier with an architectural logic. Rather than interpreting the fixture as a central point or decorative object, it is articulated through a modular structure that unfolds horizontally and vertically across a space.

Nexum is more than a collection. It’s like a neuron connection in the brain… it flows with people.”

Geometric lines extend and intersect one another, introducing order, rhythm and proportion. As the composition unfolds, it defines pathways and creates hierarchies, encouraging spatial flow and adapting to different needs. It is never imposing, but rather accompanies the architecture.

Nexum is like a skeleton. The skeleton permits us to stand up but also to be extremely flexible. If our body were only modular, we would fall apart.”

“Non-adaptable systems or solutions are stuck in the place where they were created. They will never evolve into the future.”

According to Levy, modularity speaks only about the connection between similar elements, whereas flexibility is the ability to do many different things at the same time. Nexum can be arranged into various geometries—Lineal, Rectangular, Square and Volumetric—adjusting to the proportions of each environment without losing formal coherence.

“With many other lights that I have designed, the object was very important. In this specific system I give more space to how I feel than to what I see.”

Within this structure, light is understood as a tool for constructing space, a “language” to generate perception, shape emotion, and define the spatial experience. Light points are discreetly incorporated into Nexum’s geometry, forming part of the system without interrupting its continuity.

“I’m interested in the effect that the system creates and the ability of light designers and architects to play with it and use it as a language to compose a feeling in a space. It is a visual and light psychotherapy.”

Levy emphasizes the importance of delivering subtle, balanced illumination that avoids shadows and excessive contrasts. Rather than playing with graphics, Nexum introduces depth and volume.

“The relationship between direct and indirect light is very subtle. If you only use direct light… it adds a certain kind of visual noise. When you have the opportunity to introduce indirect light into the space, you’re creating volume. A system that offers that opportunity changes the parameters.”

Light is no longer concentrated in a single point but distributed evenly, creating spacious, coherent, and comfortable atmospheres. The collection has the specific quality of creating an aura, rather than an effect. This approach makes it possible to illuminate from an elevated position, maintaining a subtle presence that integrates naturally into the space.

“Working with the team at Vibia, we developed the light from the source out, not the form. This gave us the opportunity to create a tactile volume as if you could catch the light in a bucket.”

“Light is magic. It’s mathematics, but there’s magic to it.”

Available in suspended and ceiling mounted versions, Nexum adapts to both residential and large-scale contract environments, always maintaining a consistent logic: to conform to its architectural surroundings and create balanced, integrated atmospheres.

Nexum doesn’t have a limit or an application to a specific place. Its application is to provide the result that we are looking for.”

In a high-ceilinged atrium in a hotel or restaurant, it magnifies the user’s sense of presence. For smaller, residential settings, the super-slim, ceiling-mounted option provides effective lighting without compromising on space. Installed above a table, it evokes a calm atmosphere, fostering an intimate relationship between user and environment.

Nexum is not a style or a trend. Nexum is knowledge. Nexum is a feeling. Nexum is an intention.”

Nexum is not an object, it is a system. It is not an invasion of space, but rather a performance of it. Whatever the setting, its luminous geometry connects scenes, organises spaces, and defines serene, coherent environments. Light becomes part of the spatial structure – a continuous, harmonious narrative that flows with the rhythm of daily life.
