Plusminus Essentials: the evolution of the collection towards a more simplified user experience

Plusminus, the emblematic and flexible lighting system designed by Stefan Diez, has evolved into a ready-made lighting solution contained within 4 toolboxes. These boxes combine all the necessary elements to create easy-to-configure compositions, simplifying the process without sacrificing the essence of the collection. In just three steps it’s possible to come up with a composition and bring it to fruition within just a week.

Plusminus Essentials maintains the transformational potential of Plusminus, bringing a more accessible approach to the system. The Plusminus collection is based on a textile belt where the conductive electrical wiring is woven imperceptibly into the fabric. Different light fittings can be attached to any part of the belt through the click & connect facility, illuminating different spaces in an instant and providing great compositional freedom. Plusminus Essentials builds off this premise, an uncomplicated solution for residential and contract projects, facilitating simple and flexible lighting configurations that can be adapted to any project. Furthermore, it’s much easier to transport and deliver to site, which is a bonus in a market that is increasingly fast paced.

How does Plusminus Essentials work?

The proposal is based on a system of four different toolbox options: each containing a selection of preconfigured components within that facilitate the creation of lighting compositions. With just a single toolbox the user can build a series of configurations, freely adapting them to the needs of any individual project. With this approach each toolbox is based on a predetermined selection of elements, while the final design remains undefined, allowing for the creation of different compositions within the possible options offered by each box.

The configuration process for Plusminus Essentials is structured along three steps:

  1. Select a toolbox according to the desired configuration: tensile, to create more structured configurations; or loose, providing for more fluid compositions.

Plusminus Essentials features 4 toolboxes organised into different compositional options:

  • Toolbox 1 and 3 : loose configurations. The textile belt for the collection is loosely suspended, allowing for more fluid compositions. The main difference between both lies in the length of the textile belt: toolbox 1 provides 6 m length and toolbox 3 provides 10 m length.

  • Toolbox 2 and 4 : tensile configurations. In this case the textile belt is in tension, allowing for the creation of more defined and tensile configurations. The difference between both is also based on the length of the textile belt: toolbox 2 provides 6 m length and toolbox 4 provides 10 m length.
