Array, Plusminus and Bigger illuminate and define a flexible showroom for new ways of working

A place for inspiration, a meeting point for workshops and creative exchanges, an operations centre and various rooms in which to showcase its products, all in one. The Sedus showroom hub in Düsseldorf, Germany, is conceived as an open and versatile floor plan that combines display, work, meeting and relaxation. Here, its products designed for offices, particularly modular furniture and ergonomic chairs, can be tried out and viewed up close, as the space is designed to experience the furniture and its real-life use. Founded in 1871, Sedus is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of office equipment. Its “Made in Germany” product portfolio sets the benchmark in this market in terms of ergonomics, production and sustainability. Today, at a time when working environments have changed so much in recent years, Sedus continues to innovate and adapt with its modern, high-quality pieces, which are as functional as they are aesthetic, as simple as they are durable.

This new workplace architecture is versatile, dynamic and human, made up of different continuous zones without separations, which integrate diverse uses and respond to new, more flexible and connected ways of working. It seems to have answered the following question: How can workspaces be created that facilitate both concentration and interaction? In the current era of hybrid working, people return to the office not only to collaborate and exchange ideas, but also to think and reflect in peace. Companies face the challenge of meeting both needs – concentration and interaction – in shared places. Today, the ideal office is a communicative and welcoming hub, integrated into an ecosystem of different work areas that also includes third spaces such as cafés, green areas or coworking corners.

This Sedus showroom in Düsseldorf (and its furniture too) is a good example of all this: large shared tables and a fully equipped kitchen, warm materials, textiles and comfortable cushions, colour accents, decorative objects, natural elements… Light is an important part of the project, both in how it can help structure the space and create transitions between areas and, at the same time, in how it is a vital element in the experience, accompanying people through different moments and working hours. Through the combination of three Vibia collections, several layers of light have been created: general, ambient and accent, generating differentiated atmospheres without losing continuity. Each luminaire thus adapts to a different use and creates an effect, but it is their coexistence that builds the coherent and balanced environment. A system that should be read as a whole, but which we can also analyse separately.

In the relaxation area, above the sofas, we find Array, a pendant luminaire whose enveloping light softens the space and also a true suspended sculpture, light and dynamic, made from fine threads that interact with the light in a very beautiful way, adding transparency, depth and plays of colour.

Plusminus, a design by Diez Office, runs through the space in different configurations: as a tensioned belt with a linear diffuser that follows the route vertically, in ceiling compositions with cones and spotlights in a beige finish for the relaxation areas, in a semisphere version in Terra Red above the work table, creating a more focused scene, in a sphere version in dining areas with more diffuse light and, finally, as spotlights on a tensioned belt in work areas, providing precision. Here we see the versatility of the collection in all its splendour: lighting tracks made with textile belts that allow luminaires to be freely attached and unique solutions to be created.

Finally, Bigger stands out in the kitchen, introducing a lower, closer light, perfect for specific areas of activity, and defining a point for pause and encounter. Its essential design combines a large-scale presence with a minimal shade, flat diffuser and those ultrafine cables that keep it floating. With generous light descending from above, its imposing scale and serene geometry introduce a new visual dimension.

Three collections for three needs, but with the same common objective: using light to design spaces that merge display and real use, creating more adaptable, connected and human environments.
